Greetings Jeroen,

This summer, 60,000 of you wrote postcards protesting Shell’s plans to destroy the Sacred Headwaters. In September, I hand-delivered your messages to Shell Canada’s president, Lorraine Mitchelmore. During that time, Shell raked in a staggering $7 billion in profits. That’s over $3 million per hour.

Yet Shell still refuses to back down from its plans to scar one of the most stunning landscapes in British Columbia with thousands of kilometres of roads and wells.

We have one year to stop this:

The British Columbian government has the power to kick Shell out for good.Send a message to Premier Christy Clark and tell her to get the Shell out of the Sacred Headwaters -- permanently.

In 2008, thanks to pressure from folks like you, B.C. placed a moratorium on Shell’s dangerous plans to turn the Headwaters into an industrial checkerboard of wells and roads. This moratorium will expire on December 5th, 2012.

The week after!

The week after! Yes the NAss dropped close to 10 feet and most part of the high way was open again. We drove up to the camp with the feeling i can not discribe with words. We had news that the camp was in the water! But it might be there. Getting closer to the Nass we saw a lot of devastation! And then you really realize the power of mother nature. We passed stretches of high way that where under water on the previous posts. The water mark clearly visible and left a small lake on the other side of the highway. On the left we did see the river 10 feet lower en 300 feet away! Man this has been a beast! The boat launch was gone! We had the launch the boat in unknown territory! We almost got stuck but manage to get out there safely. While jet boating down the river we saw the devastation right away! The whole river changed! A part of the forrest was gone!!! Just completely gone! It lef a swampy field with no trees. Our favourite run AKA theresa is gone! And we had a very sad feeling like somebody died in the family. That is the closed way to discribe the feeling i had when looking at this devastation. Log piles just stacked on the bank like there where tooth pick's! We came around the corner, no camp!!! And then a view seconds later yes there she is still standing strong on the high bank. It was a relief, a feeling of landing a 30 pound steelhead! After docking the boat we walked true the camp, it was a big mess. The river left a big layer of mud in the camp an the tents where still full of water. Most electrical items where toast and the cleaning starts. It took us 2 full days to clean the camp as goos as we could do it. We had to chance to main tent's floor and the complete surrounding where a mud pile. For now we will leave it like this and focus on the river!

This was the first time in our history we had to cancel the clients for this week! Only Bjorn from Germany was already here! He did some coho fishing and did well. Pics later of his stay.

So far we are tired and the guiding start again in a new river!

Ou camp is flooded but hopefully we can safe the camp. But for now there is no way for us to go up there! All the high way's are closed and till further notice the will be closed.

This is not how we want to start our fall steelhead camp, but this is beyond our control! The Nass river topped at 7,70 meters high! What is a record i think! As soon i can check out the camp i will post more pics and a update but the river will be changed big time and what about the steelhead did they survive a tragedy like this! We will see soon i hope! This is North West BC a dangerous place to live and this is just one of many things that can go wrong, and we are far away from civilization!

We had some tough conditions last week. The river came up over 6 feet in 24 hours so most of our fishing was over for that week. But when the river was dropping again the boy's where back in action. The lost a lot of high jumping, cart wheeling steelheads. But they also managed to land a bunch. From now on we will start running our remote steelhead camp in search of pristine steelhead and nature.

Derek had the chance to fish for a couple minutes and landed this beauty!

Dave landed this very fresh and bright king while steelheading the lower skeena river.

We thought dave hooked a 30 pound steelhead for sure but after 35 minutes we found out the reason why this fish was so strong. A very nice bonus, steelheding the lower skeena river.

It took some time but we have some new pics to up load. Some how the pics we are up loading are not showing in the right format. So we have to trow a lot of good pics away. It might be the setting in what the pic is shot, or it might be some thing else. But we can't use them.

Drama on the kitimat river!

A drift boat up side down in the kitimat. We called the rcmp and search and resque.
We tried to get to the boat, but the current was to strong and to deep.
A bad picture but the rcmp towed the boat back to shore. There where 5 people in it that all survived the flip over. The dog did not made it. It was tied down to the boat and had no chance of surviving this drama! So never tie a dog to the boat!

The kitimat river is a very dangerous river, it claims ives almost every year, because people underestimate the power of the water. There are lot's of log jams that can kill you in a second.

That is why we use AIRE self bailing rafts, the top of the line in rafts!

Fishing is still super for chinook! We hooked a good number of fish and lost a fish over 60 pounds for sure! But that is fly fishing for chinook. You will only land a small percentage of the fish you hook. They are in a lot of times just to strong. But sooner or later we will land a true monster a fish over 60 or 70 pounds on the fly! Yes FLY!

But for now have a look on the fish we landed last week.

We and the Skeena river need your help! please read this email and do your part to preserve the future and excellent fishing!

Derek, imagine a massive oil spill less than a kilometre from your home or your child’s preschool. Your whole neighbourhood suffering terrible health effects. Being unable to move away, knowing the contamination is poisoning you.

It happened to Susan and Michelle when oil giant Enbridge spilled over three million litres of Tar Sands oil into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River one year ago today.

Enbridge hasn't cleaned up this mess, but they're already pushing plans that will threaten communities and salmon-bearing rivers from Alberta to British Columbia’s pristine coast. Stop their proposed pipeline now -- before we’re all on clean-up duty.

We need only look to the Kalamazoo to understand what Enbridge's plan would cost us:

Still closed a year later, the Kalamazoo harbors piles of oil that have even contaminated a lake over 40 km away.¹ A report released this month showed that heavy metals (high levels are present in Tar Sands oil) are in the water supply at dangerous levels.² Enbridge promised Michelle that they would pay for people to relocate from her neighbourhood (just 200 feet from the spill), but she hasn’t seen a dime. Of her 70 neighbours directly affected by the spill, the company has only helped three.

Michelle has this message for you: "I don't want to see this happen to another community. You need to continue to fight, not just for yourself but for future generations."

Can you help us stop Enbridge now?

50 pound Skeena power!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carl is the happy man who landed this 50 pounder on the skeena!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are now fishing up our season for the chinooks! And we ended with a bang. In search of a real monster what better to find them in the Skeena river the home of many world records. After loosing a couple fish, what is part of the game in fly fishing for chinook, we hooked into this monster. When Carl set the hook the water exploded like a volkswagen thrown into the water and all hell broke loose. After a battle we managed to land this fish, but it did not fitted into the landing net!

This season has been very good to us with the chinooks, but we have to give the credits to our clients that did all a outstanding job fishing for these fish. A lot of folks tell us that fly fishing for chinook can't be done! Are they wrong. They told us, no way you will get them in the main stem Skeena! do we need to say more...........

Now we will have some fun with the chums! In my and Derek's opinion the most underestimated game fish on the fly. They pull like crazy and fight like hell! So all the ingredients for a perfect time!
Same fish other side this fish was almost to difficult to lift. And you know i have lifted a lot of big fish. But man what a fish!

It has been quite on this blog for a week! For a good reason! Fishing for Kings was epic! In our best day we hooked 17 and landed 9! That is a number that is hard to beat. We landed 2 fish over 40 pounds! Ruud was ready with me to take the picture of the giant, and we could not hold it and it got away! What a bummer but he landed that big male estimated 44 pounds!

We even managed to get a double hook up with kings twice!!!! It does not get any better than this! The lucky anglers this week where, Ruud, Johan, Herman, Matthijs and Henny.

I will not post all the king pictures, only the nice ones or very big ones. I will post again 3 pics per day! Enjoy!

It is almost getting normal but this is the fourth King we landed in 2 weeks that weight in over 40 pounds!

David was the lucky angler that landed this beauty! Well deserved, but his reel did not survived the fight. The drag burnt! And locked up!

But this is not a fish you will land every week!

For the rest: Fly fishing for Kings is absolutely hot right now! We hook lots of fish but the landing percentage is still way below how it should be:)

Look at this fish!!!! We still have to do the final calculations but it is over 20 KG!!!!!!

It took Dima 1 hour and 23 minutes to land this giant fish, just from the salt!

It is truly a fish of a (his) life time!! Those fish, you do not see them often! That is why i guide to pursuit fish like this! And get people into a fish of there life!

After our great trip to Russia a had 1 day to recover from all the vodka and beer. But Guiding season has started for my favourite fish on the spey rod the king! This time of the year is always a special time for me, it is the time my adrenalin starts flowing, broken rods, lines reels and lots of frustration! But the reward..... that 40 inch plus chrome leaping in the air ripping line of your reel faster then you can blink with you eye's! In one word incredible! And for me it is almost like doing drugs, really it is that addictive! I think a need my medicine again.

Ok back to fishing! We hooked good numbers of King's but....... the landing percentage was not so high maybe 10% we managed to get to the net! But we have seen some big fish jump on the end of our lines well over 40 pound's. But that is fishing! I am waiting for some pictures of our clients that we can post on our blog! I can tell you it is well worth waiting for!

Yes we are back from the Kola river from Russia!

We had a great trip! Our guest where, Lon volberding from Seatlle, Richard Davidson from Seatlle, The one and only Bob Meiser!, Jaap Kalkman from Smithers BC Canada, Andre de Wit from the Netherlands, my good friend Dave Wilder from Washington and my self.

We had some tough conditions because the river was very high due run off. It was the first week of June what is always a tricky week to book. But that means you also have the chance to hook into a monster or a real fish of a life time!

We did well. We hooked 12 fish and landed only 7 most of them with sea lice with 6 rods! If you think this is a poor result you have not been fishing the Kola river, or BIG Atlantic salmon. The Kola river is not a numbers river but a river that host the worlds biggest Atlantic salmon! And you have a real shot of hooking into big fish. But it is not a easy river! If you think steelheading is tough then don't fish the kola in the first week of June!

Bob Meiser lost the biggest fish of the trip! It was a 40 pound Atlantic salmon that he lost by the beach! It was played out after 25 minutes and ready to be netted when the single hooked popped out! So Bob will be back next year to take revenge! Now it is personal!

Lon Volberding landed the biggest one of the trip a whopping 30 pound plus Atlantic salmon.

We still have to do the accurate calculations for all the weights, but we have all messurements!

So i can give you the real weights soon! But who cares! Have a look at the first 3 fish! We will show the same fish again later this week in a different pose because they are so beauty full! ha

We also fished the Varzuga river for 2 day's for some smaller Atlantic salmons. We landed roughly 20 of them in the 6 to 8 pound range. It was a blast on a 6 weight spey rod and a hardy st george!

The spring steelhead season is ended and we had a great season! I would like to thank all our clients for the wonderful time they gave us and the great pictures we could use for this blog. In a couple weeks from now my favourite time of the year starts! FLY FISHING FOR BIG KINGS!

This time of the year we will see broken rods, lines straight out hooks! And 35 plus pound chrome kings! Can't wait for that to happen.

But in the mean time it is my turn to fish! And while the rivers are blown in Terrace with run off i will be going to Kola Russia to find some BIg Atlantic salmon.

My good friend Bob Meiser and 5 other friends will join me in search of Big Atlantic's

Finding Nemo!

It was a very cold day! but a nice one! we landed 3 nice steelheads today with a whopper of a winter fish! They do not get much bigger then this!

Words can not describe the emotions what comes with a fish like this!

Earlier this week i landed a similar size steelhead! But i could not hold the fish in my hands, it was simply to strong to hold it. So i had to let it go with out pics!

How manny times in your life you will catch a 20 pound steelhead! How manny times in your life you get a winter run 20 pound steelhead!

And i had 2 in one week! A week i will never forget!

Tyler Kushnir from Speypages is staying with us for the week, and he had a great start with a 36 inch fresh buck taken from the Skeena River.

The rivers are still very low! And some rain would be very welcome!

The snow is melting!

We had some warmer weather lat week! It was so warm that i could fish in my T-shirt! It was paradise. But there is still lots of snow! But it starts to melt, and melting snow means steelhead moving in!

We had a nice exploration float and i landed a nice small buck, Derek lost one.

After that i fished the Skeena and i was rewarded with a super hot 36 inch fresh hen.

The picture will say enough!

Guiding season starts soon.

After doing a exploration float trip, we found out that the river has changed a lot! Like every year we have to scout out the rivers for new prime steelhead spots and log jams!

But it was not a easy task! We had an extreme winter with a extreme amount of snow.

All the take in and out points are not accessible at all! And we had to be creative to get in and out of the river.

My Maldives trip photo's are not in yet! So you guy's have to wait a little bit longer! But i hope it will be worth the wait.

But after working on my new house for a couple of weeks it was time to go out and try to find some winter run Steelhead!

It has been very cold here in Terrace lately with temperatures going to minus -20c in some days.

Sind's last week we finally has some warmer weather plus 4c and some light rain.

The rivers are still very low and clear. The snow on the ground needs to melt! There is still between 2 and 3 feet of snow on the ground at this time.

It took some time to get to the river and walk thru a couple feet of snow, but we where rewarded with steelhead! I landed a very nice big old Buck that has been in the river for a while now. And Derek lost one after a down river unstopable run! All and all it was a nice day! But the ice and snow needs to melt to get the river up, and bring in some new fresh steelhead.

It will be a interesting year with the excessive snow we have lately!

And now i have to get back at the house again.

In a couple of weeks we start guiding again!

Mini Spey Clave

When i spend the christmas with my family in the Netherlands i had the pleasure of hosting a mini spey clave by Fly Fishing store: Ton Temming.

It was very nice and we are really taking care of by the staff with some nice drinks and snacks.

Here a a view pics of that day. Next year we will have a follow up spey clave.

In one month from now our spring steelhead season starts!

But first i will be having my own fishing trip, holiday. I will be chasing GT and blue fin travelly's in the indian ocean. I hope i will have some nice pics to post. And if the fishing is slow at least i will have some sun shine!

It took a while but we are back in town! We had a very extreme fall, with sun, wind and rain, rain and even more rain! It blew out the river for over 2 weeks but after the blow out we found steelhead! And lots of them. When the rivers when the rivers where out we started chasing coho! Even in a blown river they will eat a fly! Here are a couple pictures from different clients from this fall. I can not post all pictures because we would run out of space. And i did not receive all pictures from our clients yet. So i will start posting a couple at the time!

A very nice Skeena Buck for Ennio from Italy.

A very fresh, with sea lice covered skeena buck for Giuseppe from Italy. It turned out to be a 23 pound fish! look how fat it is!

Gerard was on a winning streak! he kept on landing big steelheads!

I had 3 days off and went fishing with my good friend and collegue steelhead guide Jaap Kalkman from Smithers. We had a blast!
We hooked a lot and half of them on dry flies!

A tipical BC day, Rain and sun!

It was just perfect!

Some where in Northern BC! No roads, no boat launches, no people just a remote river with no body but our selfs. Just the way i like it!

We caught so many fish this last 2 weeks there is just no time and space to place them. So i choose the ones i think are the best to give you a inpression how we experienced it. We hooked big fish and lots of fish. We caught them on the classic wet tip swing. And on dries! we fished the mighty skeena and some very remote rivers. From now on i will be in the remote steelhead camp. I have no internet so it will take some time for me to post some news! But i will promise you, it will be good!!!!! I hope you like the pics!

Tight lines and maybe to next year!? We have some limited space left for th 2011 season.

Gerard also caught Northern Coho and some nice sockeye.

In one word amazing! that is how steelhead fishing is right now on the Skeena river! We hooked lots of steelhead but lost most of them! why? just click on the pictures and have a look how they jump! we fish barbless so after a couple cart wheels, jumps and other balistic behaviour, the hook pops out! Gerard my client for this week was also being spooled a couple times and we had a dozen hooks that just bended out! These steelheads are just a day or so from the ocean and are in there prime of there life! If you not have hooked one from the lower Skeena, you do not know what i mean. But after loosing lots of steelhead he landed a dozen of very nice steelheads ranging from 8 to 24 pound in size! Some fish he lost where even bigger then that and one fish was very close to the 30 pound range!

If you would like to experiance this AMAZING fishing on the Skeena river! We have some limited space left for the 2011 season.

We are also moving to a very nice fishing lodge for the 2011 season. More info about this lodge will be posted later.

Steelheading continues to be super!

The last couple of day's have been from out of this world! we hooked so many steelhead that i lost count! And i can tell you that does not happen often to me! If i have to guess i would say we hooked over 50 steelhead the last couple of days.

Most fish we lost because those steelhead are just crazy! They jump so high and rip so much line that the hooked will just tear out or come out when tail walking down the Skeena river!

After using a different kind of hook we are able to land more fish!

You just have to be here to believe it!!!!

I had also 1 day off this week, that i spend with my good friend and steelhead guide Jaap Kalkman on the river to do some dry fly steelheading. Jaap took 2 on the dry and a landed a couple nice ones on the sink tip. I hope you will like the pics.

Always a surprise when netting a skeena river fish! Is it a coho or steelhead?

It took a while for me to post a new message on my blog because of the long day's of guiding.
After we closed the fishing for chums we now only focus on chrome steelies and coho's.
Last week we had some novice spey anglers and they had a blast! After landing lots of chums it was time to the real deal! Skeena steelhead!
They quickly learned that flyfishing for steelhead is totaly diffrent then what they have experianced before! The speed, jumps and balistic behaviour of those fresh skeena steelies is from a other world! The managed to land some realy nice chrome steelies in the 10 lb range. But they hooked 5 over, or close to the 20lb range! But those fish were just to much to handle!
Nothing beats a fresh chrome skeena river steelhead on the fly!

Fishing is hot in the skeena area!

After fighting this king for several minutes the fish jumped and spit the hook! But he had the fun part of it.

Now Dave know's why king salmon are the king! That day he lost 4.

Paula ( Dave's mom) is having a hard time geting this big chum to shore.

Now the salmon are here in there full strength! The chums are here with a vengance and eating our flies like it is candy! We broke 2 rods in the past week and landed even the first summer run skeena river steelhead! yes they are here! it was not a monster but every chromer from the skeena river is a trophy! Here are some pictures i hope you like them!

I had a view hours to fish and a was rewarded with a nice chromer!

After a very warm weather the rivers rose to a point it was not fishable for a couple days. We took a well deserved break and did some crabbing in the douglas chanel. After a couple days the rivers came back into shape and the bite was on again! With some stunning chrome beauty's. We hooked lots of fish but most of them got away. Now the king season is getting to the end of the season and we are preparing for some coho and steelhead action on the skeena river. But first one more week of king and chum fishing!

A silver 40 pounder is landed after a heavy 35 minute fight!

It was tough in the beginning with changing weather conditions. But we find some fresh chrome kings! The chartreuse fly was the ticket for succes and we lost a lot of fish! Most of the fish where just to strong to handle.
This week i am Guiding Thomas and Rolandas from Litauania. They experianced some hard fighting Kings. But after losing a lot of fish they managed to land some nice fish! I had some time to fish for myself when they where resting and i got a big fish. It was fighting like crazy and i tought i was hooked to a submarine. After a hard fisght and a couple hundred meters down river i was rewarded with a 40 pound king fresh from the ocean!
Thomas and Rolandas are here for a week and they just fished 2 days!

I was very tired!

Next year we will work togther with our Russian partner to host guided trips on the Kitsa and Kola river. We will target the BIG Atlantic salmon from 10kg and up! The best timemis early June when the run off starts. Early june is the best time to fish for those big Atlantics!

Back from Kola Russia

It was very tough to get into the big fish.
Because of the very warm spring the run ff started early and most of the big fish went already up.
When i arrived in murmansk my luggage was stil in Amsterdam, and i knew it would be tough to get them here in Murmansk. You have to know that Russian customs are very difficult and they do not relaese your bags like for excample Europe in a day or so.
Back to fishing: After my week of guiding on the upper Varzuga river it was time to have my own part of fun. We fished the kola and kitsa river. It was tough, lot of people but i managed to land a couple nice fish. But i lost a couple big ones! one of them bend out my hook. Wel here are some pics and now i am preparing for my guide season at home. The first clients will arrive july 8 to chase the mighty king salmon.
